5 Reasons Why Dental Implants Are So Expensive

We help a lot of patients with Dental Implants. While providing consultation about Dental Implants, one of the top questions on our patients’ minds is cost of dental implants. Specifically, why dental implants are so expensive? Are there alternatives to dental implants that can be used instead of implants?

So let’s dive in and understand how costly dental implants are, and why they are among the more expensive procedures.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants are a permanent, long-term solution to missing teeth. In this procedure, your existing tooth is extracted, and a post is placed in your jaw. This post is made of strong, corrosion-resistant metal. The metal post is secured to the jawbone in order to create a durable, synthetic root system that rivals the strength of natural roots; with one exception that the metal cannot face infection. Then, a synthetic tooth is placed on top of the metal post to mimic your natural teeth in color, shape and size.

The Dental Implant is highly durable and can last for an entire lifetime. However, it is a costly procedure and it can take weeks to months for the complete procedure to finish end to end.

Lastly, not everyone qualifies for dental implants. If you want to know whether you qualify for dental implants take the quiz below.

How Much Do Dental Implants Cost?

Dental Implants can cost anywhere from $3000 to $6000 per implant. Many dental offices, including Fab Dental, offer affordable financing for Dental Implants.

Why Dental Implants Are So Expensive

There are a number of reasons for Dental Implants to be expensive. Here are the top 5 reasons:

  1. Placing Dental Implants is a complex surgical procedure requiring deep expertise and high level of precision.
  2. Placing Dental Implants is a long procedure requiring multiple dental visits.
  3. Dental Implants are built from Titanium – an expensive metal.
  4. Dental Lab fee is high for Crowns required after dental implants.
  5. Dental Implants are accompanied by additional procedures like tooth extractions.

1. Placing Dental Implants Is A Complex Surgical Procedure

Placement of Dental Implants is a very complex invasive surgical procedure. Surgical procedures requires a dentist with a lot of training and expertise. Most of the dentists are either Oral Surgeons, or Dentists with many years of experience in doing Implants.

Dr. Alag DDS is credentialed by AGD, CDA and ADA. She was awarded a Fellowship in Implantology by the International Dental Implant Association in 2018. That makes her among the top few Dentists in USA, specially when it comes to expertise in placing Dental Implants.

2. Placing Dental Implants Is A Long Procedure

Placing implants can take a few months. First, your bone is evaluated to check if you are eligible for implants. If needed, a bone-graft is placed to improve the quality of bone for implants. Then an implant is placed and the jawbone is allowed to heal for a few months. Then abutment and crown is placed on top of it after a few months of healing.

Since it is a long visit, it takes a lot of time from the dentist and that translates to cost.

3. Dental Implants Require Expensive Raw Materials

Dental Implants require Titanium or other noble metals for their construction. Titanium is an expensive material. In addition, abutments and Crowns are also expensive.  If the raw material (in this case implants, abutments and crowns) is expensive, it adds to the cost of the overall procedure.

4. Dental Lab Fee Is High For Crowns

When an implant is placed, the procedure is not complete. An abutment and crown is needed on top of it to make sure you get a natural look and feel from your teeth. Crowns are built to match a required tooth structure and be compatible with your jaw structure. Crowns are built by first taking an impression of your jaw and then sending that impression to an external Dental Lab. This external lab has specialized equipments to build natural-looking crown from the impression, which matches your required jaw and tooth structure as well as tooth color.

This is a specialized procedure and is also an expensive one, adding to the cost of the overall implant procedure

5. Dental Implants Are Accompanied By Additional Procedures

Detal Implants can be accompanied by additional procedures. If you are going for implant-supported denture, then tooth extraction might be required before implant is placed. Even simple implants sometimes are accompanied by tooth extraction.

Since crowns are made of very resistant materials, they don’t de-color over time. That means before the crown is placed, Teeth Whitening is suggested. That is another procedure that is commonly accompanied by Dental Implant procedure.

These additional procedures have their own costs and that increases the overall cost of Dental Implants.
