Dental Implants vs Veneers

How To Decide Between Them?

We get asked by our patients whether they should go for a Dental Implants or Dental Veneers. These are very different procedures, used for different situations. In this post let’s go over what they are, their similarities and differences, and also how to decide between the two.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants are a permanent, long-term solution to missing teeth. In this procedure, your existing tooth is extracted, and a post is placed in your jaw. This post is made of strong, corrosion-resistant metal. The metal post is secured to the jawbone in order to create a durable, synthetic root system that rivals the strength of natural roots; with one exception that the metal cannot face infection. Then, a synthetic tooth is placed on top of the metal post to mimic your natural teeth in color, shape and size.

The Dental Implant is highly durable and can last for an entire lifetime. However, it is a costly procedure and it can take weeks to months for the complete procedure to finish end to end.

What Are Dental Veneers?

A Dental Veneer is a thin shell that is made out of porcelain or ceramic. The shade of the veneer, along with its shape and size will be made to match your surrounding teeth so that it blends in perfectly.
Dental Veneer is put on top of existing teeth to improve the aesthetics of your smile. A Veneer can be used to close gaps, make teeth longer (so that they are even in length), cover dark stains and create uniform looking smile.

How To Decide Between Dental Veneers and Dental Implants?

Dental Implants are for replacing missing teeth, while Dental Veneers are for improving the aesthetics of already existing teeth. Sometimes a tooth has infection and will need to be removed. In that case, a Dental Implant is a good option to go for since the tooth needs to be replaced. In most other cases where you already have the tooth and want to improve the aesthetics, Dental Veneers is a good option.
